Construct two identical columns 1 1/2 inches apart with seven Brillo boxes (7 1/4 inches high x 5' width x 2 1/2' deep ) set vertically. The spectator is invited to hit each column separately with a broom until all the boxes are spread on the floor. The contents of each box -- the steel wool soap pads -- is dumped on the floor and they are all swept with a broom in a single mound. The empty boxes are then lined up horizontally in a circle around it.

The next spectator fills each box with pads and sweeps all the boxes in one mound. The boxes are then piled back on top of each other into two identical columns 1 1/2 inches apart , etc.

The idea of the installation is that what assembles divides. The Empire can only be built with multiplicities and they also contain its downfall. |
